"A Family Tragicomic", so der Untertitel, ist die perfekte Bezeichnung für Alison Bechdels 2006 veröffentlichte und mehrfach ausgezeichnete Graphic Novel "Fun Home". Die Großartigkeit der Geschichte liegt dabei definitiv in Bechdels Darstellung ihres wundersamen Vaters, der vieles ist: Englischlehrer und Bestatter, pedantisch und mit einer Vorliebe für viktorianische Architektur. (In der Erzählerin kommt nicht nur einmal die Vermutung auf, sie seien vielleicht gar nicht die Bechdels, sondern die Addams Family. Leichen im Fun Home, Funeral Home, bestätigen diese Vermutung.) Was mit einem Augenzwinkern, einer karrikativen, sympathischen Darstellung beginnt, in der es nicht mehr als ungemein komisch ist, dass besagter Vater auch irgendwann eine Affäre mit Roy, dem männlichen Babysitter der Familie, hatte, dass er ab und an zum Psychologen geht, bekommt im Laufe der sieben größeren Kapitel eine sehr ernsthafte Note, und wird von der Autorin immer mehr mit ihrer eigenen Coming-Of-Age-(Coming-Out)-Geschichte verknüpft. Die gemeinsame Leidenschaft von Vater und Tochter, die Literatur, spickt die Graphic Novel zusätzlich mit Bezügen zu Proust, Joyce, Salinger und wird so zu einem grandiosen emotional-intellektuellen Leseerlebnis.

The Sad Ghost Club Volume 1

"The sad ghost club" ist eines dieser Bücher, die ich gerne und häufig verschenke. Ich habe Lizzie Meddings Graphic Novel durch Zufall hier im KulturKaufhaus entdeckt und mich sofort verliebt. Mithilfe von Geistern beschreibt Meddings, wie man sich trotz Gesellschaft einsam bzw. fehl am Platz fühlen kann oder auch wie es sich anfühlt, nur mit viel Mühe und Kraft überhaupt aus dem Bett aufzustehen. Für mich - und vermutlich auch genügend andere Menschen - sehr nachvollziehbare Themen. Dieses Buch hat mir gezeigt, dass ich nicht alleine mit meinen Gedanken bin und es sich doch lohnen kann, eine Runde spazieren zu gehen oder über den eigenen Schatten zu springen. Wem diese Themen nicht fremd sind - egal ob persönlich oder im Bekanntenkreis - kann ich dieses Graphic Novel nur ans Herz legen.

Kusama

For those of you who can't get enough of Yayoi Kusama now that the fantastical exhibition at the Berlin Gropius Bau has ended. Macellar's graphics here definitely capture the artist's spirit and give insight into Kusama's particularly remarkable journey through life.

Fangs

Sarah Andersen proves once more that she is the queen of the modern webcomic - a reputation she has fought for as the author of the hilarious 'Sarah's Scribbles' comics that get to the heart of the millennial lifestyle.
In this beautiful, clothbound book she pictures the everyday life of a most unlikely couple: a cohabiting vampire and a werewolf. On the one hand showing her love for the vampire/werewolf genre and on the other making fun of the hype, it hit the mark with me.
Truly enjoyable and of course, funny!!

Nineteen Eighty-Four

Whoa. What a devastating read! A dystopia in the darkest sense of the word - without a happy ending whatsoever (that's how I interpret it at least).
A must-read classic.

Big Panda and Tiny Dragon

This is balm for the soul!
Panda and Dragon will take you on a philosophical journey where neither the journey NOR the destination is that important - it's the company that matters.
A book full of the wisdom of at least a hundred self-help books condensed into one short read. ;)

Dune: The Graphic Novel, Book 1: Dune

Now that the Dune movie has been postponed to fall 2021, this graphic novel means we don't entirely miss out on seeing the Herbert novel in visual form. And what a feast it is! Each panel is dominated by either red or blue shades of color and clear contours - a style I absolutely love.
As in every graphic novel adaption I feel that a bit of the complexity and inner logic of the original is lost - even though a picture can often say more than a thousand words.
Still, the artists behind this work did the best possible job and I really enjoy delving into the story - a few pages at a time, in order to take in every beautiful detail.

Cover, Schreibstil, Inhalt und Fazit
Dies ist eine Gravic Novel, die einfach nur wunderschön gezeichnet ist. Aber nicht nur das, der Schreibstil für die kleinen Texte ist toll.
Ich mag das Cover auch so gerne, es spiegelt die Geschichte wider und macht Lust auf den Inhalt.
Hier geht es um Ari der in der Backstube von seinen Eltern helfen soll, was er aber nicht möchte. Er möchte lieber mit seinen Freunden einen schönen Sommer erleben. Ari benimmt sich dabei wie er Teenager und das ist manchmal echt anstrengend.
Er trifft auf Hector, der einen Job sucht und das Backen liebt....
Er ist deutlich erwachsener, was an den Umständen liegen könnte.
Ich mag die Geschichte echt gerne und die Illustrationen sind so liebevoll gestaltet. Ich mag wie es alles in einer Farbschattierung gehalten ist.
Die Geschichte war schön, sie hat mich nur nicht komplett einnehmen können. Ich habe nicht so einen Draht zu Ari bekommen. Dafür fand ich Hector so toll, zu ihm hab ich mehr einen Zugang gefunden. Es lag vielleicht auch einfach an Ari, dass seine Persönlichkeit mich nicht so berühren konnte.
Ich fand die Illustrationen hat auch mein Herz berührt.
Ich kann euch die Gravic Novel echt empfehlen und wünsche euch viel Spaß beim Lesen.
