100 Hugs

I'm usually not a fan of gift books but this little gem convinced me from the second I laid eyes on it. Many of you might know Riddell's drawings from children's books or his fantastic illustrations to Neil Gaiman's stories.
Here he depicts one hundred loving and wholesome embraces, be it dragons, mice, or humans in sibling, lover or friend form. I marvelled at each and every page and will pick up this book everytime I feel like I need a hug from a friend!

A great opportunity to compensate for the lack of physical affection at the moment due to Covid.

A Day in the Life of a Poo, a Gnu and You (Winner of the Blue Peter Book Award 2021)

A wonderful graphic guide for kids that I stumbled upon by chance and now recommend to every kid between 7 and 11 years old.
It's split into three sections: the human body, the animal kingdom, and earth and science. The guide covers topics such as the function of the brain, the life of bees and how a light bulb works in one to two pages.
Both the cartoons and the texts are hilarious and entertaining to read which makes keeping the facts easy and fun. Perfect for book-shy children to become engrossed with reading!

Goodnight Moon, Board Book

If someone were to ask me what my favorite bedtime story was as a little human and whether I would still recommend that picture book today - my answer would always be "Goodnight Moon" and "yes." Apart from its endearing illustrations, this nighttime read creates a special atmosphere of comfort and sleepiness, as it invites children to consider the superpower of saying and hearing a final Good Night from those closest to you before closing your eyes.

The Unadoptables

OH MY GOUDA, this book! It tells the story of five orphans in 19th century Amsterdam who are thrown into an adventure when they are forced to escape their orphanage one night.
I fell in love with Lotta, Sem, Fenna, Egg and Milou and was sad to let them go after I finished reading.

The Night Bus Hero

Do you know the Homeless Code? Social issues are at the core of this worthy middle-grade read. Despite his name, Hector is definitely no hero. He bullies his classmates and terrorizes Tom, a homeless person from the local park. One day, things get out of hand and Hector desperately needs to set things right again. He has to overcome his own fears and learns about the hardships of the homeless, such as seeking shelter on the night busses that travel through London. At the same time, all over town, thefts are being committed in well-loved public places and the homeless people are blamed. Hector and Tom, now allies and true heroes, endeavor to stop the actually responsible gang of cunning thieves in a fast-paced showdown.

Coraline

Most people are familiar with the movie adaptation of Neil Gaimans book "Coraline". But let me tell you, the book is definetly creepier and thrilling. Coraline - to be exact the reader - is completly alone and the describtion of other characters sended shivers down my spine. Especially the rats that follow Coraline around and sing creepy chants. This book was a perfect read for a lonely spooky night. Be aware of small crackling sounds in the dark and keep distance to unknown doors.

The Wizard of Oz

A classic I ran across on my neverending to-read pile and finished within a few hours. The simple writing style made it enjoyable and easy to read, even if it was first published in 1900 and the language is somewhat rigid. It becoming a classic is well deserved - though I must say I'm not interested in the volumes that follow after this first one.

Lightfall: The Girl & the Galdurian

This is an artistically and colorfully illustrated children's graphic novel set in a fantastical world where the sun disappeared a long time ago and the land is now only illuminated by several huge artificial balls of light.
I'm especially fond of Beatrice ('The Girl') who fights her constant anxiety attacks by taking deep breaths. Her worry is depicted by black swirls surrounding her which I believe is a very apt depiction of the condition.

Shoe Wars

The author of the well-loved Tom Gates series has done it again. A hilarious adventure centred around the super villain Wendy Wedge and her quest to win the Golden Shoe Award at any cost. Clever word play, glorious illustrations on every page, and a well-spaced typography, make this an ideal book for younger readers. And who among us wouldn't want to possess a pair of flying shoes?

The Ickabog; .

Written during the first Corona lock-down and with the many children in mind who had to stay home, J.K. Rowling first published this story chapter by chapter online. Ickabog is told in the style of a very traditionally fairytale At first glance with all the elements needed: a weak and vain king, his two unscrupulous advisers, some heroic children and of course a bog monster. Beyond that, J.K. Rowling once again addresses, as in all her books, pressing issues such as corruption, greed, cowardice and even the power of fake news. It is all well-packaged in a beautifully designed book with illustrations done by children from all over the world. Ickabog will appeal most to children aged 7 to 12 years.

The School For Good and Evil - Es kann nur eine geben (Das Buch zum Film) ist wirklich ein geniales Buch und ich konnte es nicht aus der Hand legen.
Ich habe Mahlzeiten (fast) vergessen und bin morgens gleich nach dem Aufstehen wieder auf das Sofa gehüpft, um weiterzulesen.
Ich feiere dieses Buch einfach und ich habe den Schuber der Reihe auf meine Wunschliste geschoben, denn ich möchte einfach nochmal in diese Märchenwelt abtauchen.
Ein ganz klare Leseempfehlung für das Buch und das Märchen.

A Tempest of Tea

Ein schönes, stolzes Gebäude und ein sehr beliebtes Teehaus. Nachts aber verwandelt es sich in eine Blutbar, denn in der Stadt leben eben neben den Menschen auch Vampire. Es treffen hier die unterschiedlichsten Figuren aufeinander und es gibt Geheimnisse, Hass und Liebe im Verborgenen und auch offen ausgetragene Kämpfe. Und dann eine große Bedrohung und alles steht auf dem Spiel und es beginnt ein Wettlauf gegen die Zeit.
Die Geschichte fängt sehr gut an und die düstere Welt ist toll beschrieben und gut gemacht. Dann verliert sich die Geschichte aber etwas und mir werden viel zu viel Personen eingeführt und es wirkt alles etwas breiig. Dann kommt wieder Spannung auf und der Erzählstil wird knapper und straffer und das tut gut. Zum Ende hin trudelt die Geschichte dann leider wieder so dahin. Hat mich nicht komplett gepackt, obwohl es wirklich großartige Momente gab.

The Reappearance of Rachel Price

Als erstes Mal hat dieses auffällige Cover sofort meine Aufmerksamkeit erregt. Noch dazu dieser wunderschöne Farbschnitt und on Top mit Page Overlay in der Erstausgabe.

In diesem Roman geht es um das Rätsel der Rachel Price, wie der Titel ja schon vermuten lässt. Diese ist vor 16 Jahren von jetzt auf gleich verschwunden.
Charlie, der Mann von Rachel schließt einen Vertrag mit einem Filmteam ab und möchte so den Fall seiner verschwundenen Frau wieder in Erinnerung rufen. Die einzige Zeugin, die das Verschwinden mitbekommen hat, war die damals zweijährige Bel, die Tochter von Rachel und Charlie. Diese saß auf dem Rücksitz des Autos als sich von Rachel jede Spur verliert. Erinnerungen hat sie selbstverständlich keine daran. Um sich erinnern zu können war sie einfach noch zu jung.

Doch plötzlich als das Filmteam mit den Aufnahmen beginnt taucht Rachel wieder auf. Dieses Auftauchen sorgt für ordentlich Trubel, da Rachel auch eine Haarsträubende Geschichte erzählt, die nicht wirklich glaubwürdig erscheint. Was ist passiert? Ist Rachel wirklich Rachel? Wo war sie die letzten 16 Jahre? Nach und nach wird alles immer mysteriöser. Die gesamte Familie scheint Geheimnisse zu haben.

Dieses Buch ist absolut nicht vorhersehbar, ist sehr fesselnd und ab dem letzten drittel ist es fast unmöglich das Lesen nochmal zu unterbrechen. Es gibt immer wieder Wendungen mit denen man nicht rechnet und es macht enorm viel Spaß zu rätseln, zu überlegen, seine eigenen Theorien zu erstellen usw.

Warum ich dennoch einen Stern abgezogen habe kann ich ganz einfach erklären:
Zum Ende hin überschlagen sich die Ereignisse total, das was noch alles passiert ging viel zu schnell, dazu kommt das mich dieses Ende nicht wirklich zufrieden gestellt hat, da es stellenweise zu unrealistisch gewesen und mir auch nicht wirklich gefallen hat. Es sind Sachen vorgefallen die nicht hätten sein müssen.
Dazu möchte ich auch noch erwähnen das mir die Charaktere alle nicht sonderlich sympathisch gewesen sind.

Mein Fazit
Ein absolut fesselnder und spannender Roman, den ich definitiv empfehlen kann. Ich werde ihn auch noch ein weiteres Mal lesen, da ich denke, das einem beim einmaligen Lesen vor lauter Spannung und mit rätseln doch das ein oder andere Detail untergeht.

They Both Die at the End

Das Buch ist mir eigentlich komplett zufällig in die Hände gefallen.
Alles schneller, alles besser, alles hektischer. Was würde passieren, wenn wir einfach wissen würden - heute, irgendwann in den nächsten 24 Stunden sterben wir? Nicht die ganze Welt, sondern wir - eine persönliche Tragödie. Wir wissen nicht, wann genau oder wie - wissen einfach, dass es gleich zum Ende geht.

Und das Buch zeigt einfach - dass wir einfach wieder reicher, schöner, erlebnissvoller leben sollten! Sich freuen über jede Sekunde, die wir haben! Einfach erfrischend!
Ich habe mich danach einfach gefreut, dass ich noch lebe und ich will einfach leben so mit viele Freude!

Ich kann nur empfehlen, vielleicht genau jetzt - die Herbst kommt dann kommt die Winter, Winterblues kommt, IV, V, VI, XXXI Welle kommt - sich einfach Zeit nehmen und einfach nachdenken, wie glücklich man ist, dass man noch lebt und kann noch so viel erleben! :)

Das Buch Dungeon Academy ? Allein unter Monster ist ein tolles Kinderbuch aus der Dungeon und Dragons Reihe. Das Buch ist diesmal speziell für Kinder gedacht und ist ein gelungener Start in die fantasievolle Buchreihe aus der Welt der Verliese und der Drachen.
Schon das Buchcover ist lustig und farbenfroh gestaltet und zeigt die Schule voller Monster und eine Welt voller Abenteuer. In einer Schule speziell für Monster sticht Zellidora Zelli besonders hervor, denn sie ist das was alle Monster in den Vergessenen Reichen besonders fürchten, ein Mensch. Doch das ist ihr Geheimnis da sich die junge Schülerin sozusagen Undercover auf diese Academy geht.
Es beginnt eine spannende Geschichte mit vielen Abenteuern und vor allem mit ganz vielen Monstern. Ein tolles Buch für die kleinen mit vielen Bildern und eine gute Einführung in die spätere Welt des großen Rollenspiels Dungeon und Dragons.
