The Topeka School is, like all of Ben Lerner's novels, a highly self-referential book. It nominally tells the story of a character called Adam Gordon, who is coming to the end of a high school career marked by the kind of male culture which, if the last few years have shown us anything, should best be described as toxic. What marks the novel out however is that under the thin veil of Adam Gordon, Lerner is describing his own experience as a teenager in the America of the early 2000s; the character mapping perfectly onto Lerner's own life.

Since the beginnings of the #metoo movement, relatively few male novelists have successfully looked at their behaviour in a way that may help to advance the debate. For me, Lerner, with his stark, self-critical honesty, is one of the few who have. Not only that (and I realise this seems improbable) but it is also a joy to read with Lerner's poetic abilities enriching his prose and even adding some humour to a treatment of a very serious subject.

Martin Herbert is Emeritus Professor at Exeter University.He was previously Director of the School of Social Work andProfessor of Psychology at the University of Leicester. He laterjoined the National Health Service full time and was in charge ofthe mental health service for children in Plymouth. This post wassucceeded by a move to Exeter where he directed the doctoral coursein clinical psychology as Professor of Clinical and CommunityPsychology. He was appointed to the Consultant ClinicalPsychologist post in the Child and Adolescent Department at theRoyal Devon and Exeter NHS Healthcare Trust. He now specialises inpersonal injury psycho-legal work. He has published books andjournal articles on various topics dealing with the psychologicalproblems of children, adolescents and adults. His latest isTypical and Atypical Development: From Conception toAdolescence (2003). Many of his books have been translated intoEuropean and Asian languages. He is a Fellow of the BritishPsychological Society.Jenny Wookey is a consultant clinical psychologist at thePlymouth Hospitals NHS Trust and also honorary tutor and supervisoron the Clinical Doctoral Course at Exeter University. She has hadmany years of working with adults in GP surgeries and with parentsand children at the Plymouth Child Development Centre. Shepreviously worked in an adultmental health and primary caresetting. Her special interests include developmental disability andyoung children with behaviour problems. In recent years she hasworked with Professor Martin Herbert researching and conductingparent training programmes.
