Although "Never let me go" deals with a classic sci-fi theme, it narrowly misses that genre.
Kathy, Ruth and Tommy grow up in an alternative late 20th century England where medicine has advanced to the point where human clones are created to keep "real people" alive longer by donating organs. Our main characters are such clones, raised in a boarding school in the countryside, a parallel world where they grow up sheltered but also under the dark shadow of their destiny.
The underlying conflict they are all struggling with - how much personality, how much individual can you be when you know you were only created after someone else and will have to sacrifice yourself for them at some point? - carries the story with a heavy melancholy.
Ishiguru does not write about the dystopian world he has created here (much of the background remains unclear), but about his "second-class people". He answers the question of their humanity for us in the most beautiful, subtle way.
Do you remember a time before the corona crisis? For Brits (and lots of other Europeans) that too was an era defined by crisis, thanks to the ups and downs of almost half a decade of Brexit discussions.

Jonathan Coe's novel begins at the very beginning of the 2010s when Brexit was barely imaginable and follows the lives of a group of characters from across Britain's many middle classes during the turmoil-there's plenty of that in their private lives too.

Coe is a remainer and it shows but he understands and can even sympathise with his political opponents and this is a pretty fair depiction of England's division. More importantly than that though, it is hysterically funny - I literally lol-ed more than once while reading it (not least during the most awkward sex scene I have ever had the (dis)pleasure of encountering).

A novel for those who seek the solace of other crises in difficult times or for Germans who want reminding that others this side of the Atlantic have it worse.

Arthur Miller wurde am 17. Oktober 1915 in New York City geboren und starb am 10. Februar 2005 in Roxbury in Connecticut. Er war ein amerikanischer Dramatiker.Miller wuchs als eines von drei Kindern jüdischer Textilfabrikanten im New Yorker Stadtteil Harlem zuerst wohlhabend und nach dem Bankrott des Familienunternehmens in der Weltwirtschaftskrise 1929 eher ärmlich in Brooklyn auf.Um sich sein Journalismus-Studium ab 1934 an der Ann Arbor University of Michigan zu finanzieren, arbeitete Miller in einer Autofabrik. Ab 1938 war er als Redakteur für die Zeitung "Michigan Daily" tätig, ehe er Mitarbeiter des Bundestheaterprojekts in New York wurde. Im Jahre 1936 wurde sein erstes Stück "Honors at Dawn" aufgeführt.1940 heiratete er Mary Slattery, mit der er zwei Kinder bekam. Mit nur 33 Jahren erhielt Miller für sein bekanntes Werk "Death of a Salesman" 1949 den Pulitzer-Preis in der Kategorie Drama. Vier Jahre später, nach der Erstaufführung des Stücks "The Crucible", geriet Miller ins Visier der "Kommunistenjäger" um Senator Joseph McCarthy und entging nur knapp dem Gefängnis.1956 ließ Miller sich von seiner ersten Frau scheiden und heiratete Marilyn Monroe. Diese Ehe endete jedoch nach fünf Jahren, da Miller die österreichische Fotografin Inge Morath kennenlernte. In dieser dritten Ehe bekam er zwei weitere Kinder.Neben den bekannten Theaterstücken schrieb Miller Reportagen, Hörspiele und Drehbücher sowie Reiseberichte, Radio-Features und Erzählungen. Seine Werke wurden vielfach ausgezeichnet und verfilmt.Arthur Miller starb mit 89 Jahren am 10. Februar 2005 in Roxbury an einem Krebsleiden.
