Anyone who watched the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race UK felt a tinge of bitterness at the Lawrence Chaney's coronation, because - let's face it - the win was rightfully Bimini Bon Boulash's. Luckily, defeat was not a problem for our idol. In addition to featuring in photoshoots for Vogue and Calvin Klein, just to name a few, and releasing new music, Bimini even published their first book, which they themselves describe as a queer self-help book. Unfortunately, the most boring parts of this guide are precisely those in which Bimini try to give advice - alas rather predictable - on topics such as Coming Out, Veganism or Pop Music (recommending Madonna is not exactly avant-garde). But when Bimini talk about their own experience as a non-binary person, the East London queer scene (before and after the pandemic) and their drug addiction (and how they came out of it), things get death-drop gorgeous!
After reading my collegue's review, I decided to give it a shot, being sex-related sociology amongst my fields of interest.
Ania Srinivasan deals with thorny topics which feminists have been engaging for decades with, without coming across as condescending. On the contrary, her stance on the different issues is imbued with knowledge and humbleness of not having necessarily the final answer. Her intellectual honesty is just so outstanding that - no matter if you agree with her or not - you can't help but keep the book glued to your eyes!

I hope to hear more of her publishings soon
This book has had something of a miraculous resurrection. A few months ago, it looked like it could well be pulped and its author sued for libel after one of his subjects took offence at a less than flattering portrait. British libel laws are such that a writer facing an oligarch in court is not felt to stand much of a chance and there was a strong feeling in the publishing world that Tom Burgis would be required to cough up a considerable sum of cash. For once however, the British courts sided with the little guy and dismissed the case, allowing this excellent book to continue its life out in the wild. Although technical and at times a bit opaque on financial detail, it is an extremely well put together account of how dodgy money (very often channelled through London) can be moved around the world and continuing enriching both its very questionable owners and their willing accessories.
In seinem autobiografischen Text "Amateur.
