'A wise, exciting and life-changing book' Arianna Huffington, author of Thrive

Modern life is full of chance encounters, changing plans, delayed journeys, human errors and other mishaps. This is the hidden force that rules our universe: serendipity. But what if we could use such unpredictability to our advantage?

Dr Christian Busch has spent a decade exploring how, if acted upon, unexpected encounters can enhance our worldview, expand our social circles and create new professional opportunities. From couples who met during chance encounters to businesspeople who invented world-changing ideas after a misfire, Dr Busch has studied hundreds of subjects who improved their lives by learning to see opportunities in the unexpected.

Connect the Dots is a revolutionary, well-researched exploration of an essential life skill that we can all develop and master.

2 quick admissions at the start of this review
1) I don't usually read self-help-y kind of books. That is not a value judgement - they just fairly rarely prick my interests.
2) My interest in this self-help-y kind of book was pricked because my dad (a magician) happens to get mentioned in it so he encouraged me to give it a read.
Those disclaimers out of the way, I did leave this book thinking it added buckets of value to my understanding of expertise. Kneebone is a surgeon and it is the medical sphere where he claims most knowledge but he is unjudgemental in how he looks at other fields. From plumbers to pianists, Kneebone believes expertise is born out of putting something centrally in your life and plugging away at it (making plenty of mistakes along the way) until you gradually accrue knowledge. He raises this method as a counterweight to the notion of accruing knowledge and understanding very quickly and makes a convincing case that creativity is key to growing true expertise.
