"Normalerweise würde ich eher nicht auf Anagramme oder Palindrome fliegen, würde denken, was für eine formalistische Spielerei / zu technisch / öffnet nichts. Weit gefehlt!
Hier atmet konstruierte Sprache, öffnet Räume mit Fallhöhe, Trapezflug, ein bisschen Rückseite des Mondes, in jedem "Fall" Neuland. Poetischer Raum eben.
Das Spannende: die Konstruktionsarbeit darin fängt mich als Lesende auf oder ein. Eine Landebahn mit Willkommensschild.
Denn es wird nur da sein, was ist. Rückseiten von Sinn vielleicht, aber kein doppelter Boden. Es fühlt sich nah an bei allem Fremd - als kenne man die Gedichte aus zutiefst grundlegender Lebenserfahrung.

This is not a new book - indeed so un-new is it that it has recently been republished in a handsome "classics" edition. Classic non-fiction is pretty hard to define - taste and timeliness overtake the factual more quickly than the fictional - but Bloomsbury deserve credit for elevating this decade-and-a-bit-old account of an 1860 murder in rural England.

What makes this book so compelling and timeless is its skilful blending of the story of the murder with an account of why detectives (and by extension detective fiction) so captivated Victorian Britain. Before reading it, I had no idea how new detectives were in the 1860s and how much media and literary attention they garnered in their early existence, with people from across society pitching in to praise their omniscience or to criticise their actions as murder solving became a national parlour game. Excellently written and researched this book will help you understand why Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple are as famous as they are.

Die winzige Wohnung ist für 5 Personen nicht geeignet, die Generationen, Eheleute und Geschwister reiben sich aneinander auf und kommen zu keinem Kompromiss. Missverständnisse, Identitätsfragen und den Kampf gegen schwelenden Rassismus lesen wir aus allen Szenen heraus, die perfekt aufeinander abgestimmt sind. Gerade Walter Lee in seiner Verzweiflung erinnerte mich stark an Willy Loman aus "Tod eines Handlungsreisenden" von Arthur Miller, das 10 Jahre zuvor entstand. Hansberry reiht sich mühelos in die großen amerikanischen Dramatiker:innen ihrer Zeit ein.

A short and comparatively easy-to-read British classic from 1886 about the duality of human nature. Stevenson's linguistic eloquence is a pleasure to consume!

Titus Maccius Plautus was born in Sarsina, Umbria, in about 254 BC, and was originally named, after his father, Titus. Little is known of his life, but it is believed that he went to Rome when young and worked as a stage assistant. His potential as an actor was discovered and he acquired two other names: Maccius, derived perhaps from the name of a clown in popular farce, and Plautus, a cognomen meaning "flat-footed." Somehow Plautus saved enough capital to go into business as a merchant shipper, but this venture collapsed, and he worked (says the tradition) as a miller's laborer, and in his spare time studied Greek drama. From the age of forty onwards he achieved increasing success as an adaptor of Greek comedies for the Roman stage. Much of his work seems to be original, however, and not mere translation. He was rewarded by being granted Roman citizenship. According to Cicero he died in 184 BC.

E.F. Watling was educated at Christ's Hospital and University College, Oxford. His translations of Greek and Roman plays for the Penguin Classics include the seven plays of Sophocles, nine plays of Plautus, and a selection of the tragedies of Seneca.
