I've always been intrigued by the paradoxical tale of the Ship of Theseus, which has all of its parts exchanged one at a time, but still remains the same ship. In reference to Barthes, Maggie Nelson identifies the ship as the Argo and transfers the allegory to us living beings, the Argonauts. While this book is mainly about Nelson's pregnancy and her relationship to the fluidly gendered Harry Dodge, I wouldn't call it a memoir. In fact, it is very hard to put a label on Nelsons's writing style, which is one of the many reasons that make this such an inspiring read. Her intimate and genuine thoughts about her sexuality and changing body tend to be connected or lead to complex academic discourses; but, and very importantly, without the former only catering to the latter. This is not an inductive study, it is deductive (or it might be both). Nelson's book makes the intellectual personal, and the personal intellectual - the result is oddly empowering.
(Samia)
