"A profoundly urgent intervention." -Naomi Klein

"A timely must-read for anyone actively invested in re-imagining collective futurity." -Claudia Rankine

From a global icon, a bold, essential account of how a fear of gender is fueling reactionary politics around the world.

Judith Butler, the groundbreaking thinker whose iconic book Gender Trouble redefined how we think about gender and sexuality, confronts the attacks on "gender" that have become central to right-wing movements today. Global networks have formed "anti-gender ideology movements" that are dedicated to circulating a fantasy that gender is a dangerous, perhaps diabolical, threat to families, local cultures, civilization-and even "man" himself. Inflamed by the rhetoric of public figures, this movement has sought to nullify reproductive justice, undermine protections against sexual and gender violence, and strip trans and queer people of their rights to pursue a life without fear of violence.

The aim of Who's Afraid of Gender? is not to offer a new theory of gender but to examine how "gender" has become a phantasm for emerging authoritarian regimes, fascist formations, and transexclusionary feminists. In their vital, courageous new book, Butler illuminates the concrete ways that this phantasm of "gender" collects and displaces anxieties and fears of destruction. Operating in tandem with deceptive accounts of "critical race theory" and xenophobic panics about migration, the anti-gender movement demonizes struggles for equality, fuels aggressive nationalism, and leaves millions of people vulnerable to subjugation.

An essential intervention into one of the most fraught issues of our moment, Who's Afraid of Gender? is a bold call to refuse the alliance with authoritarian movements and to make a broad coalition with all those whose struggle for equality is linked with fighting injustice. Imagining new possibilities for both freedom and solidarity, Butler offers us a hopeful work of social and political analysis that is both timely and timeless-a book whose verve and rigor only they could deliver.

What does it mean to grow up in a world made for men, and more specifically cis, white and straight men? It means hiding who we really are, curbing our emotional development and creating an identity that ensures we are accepted for who we are (not). Through his experience as a therapist, Alan Downs writes about the stress involved in the constant search for validation and the rage that results from confronting a self that cannot be authentic. And it is a velvet rage, because it is an emotion that we learn to inhibit, but which nevertheless continues to exist and shape us. It is a journey that does not only affect homosexual men, but anyone who has to deal with the shame of being different and therefore unlovable.
In this captivating book Amelia Horgan explores work as a dominant feature of capitalism and examines how our day-to-day lives are deeply influenced by capitalist ideology. This is an anti-capitalist manifesto Karl Marx himself would be proud of, which challenges long withstanding myths and provides the necessary analytical tools for a critical engagement with the status quo. Horgan develops a comprehensible theoretical framework that inspires action and - maybe even more importantly - hope that things can still change. She ends with a heartfelt call for unionising which takes on new urgency in view of the recent developments in workers' rights all over the world.

Last week I told a colleague about reading a book about Amazon and his immediate question was, "is it very scary?" So let me just clarify right away, that I fully excpect this to be the scariest book I will read this year. For booksellers, Amazon is clearly never far from our thoughts and I make a point of reading books about the - not to put to fine a point on it - "enemy". The same seems to be true for Alec McGillis whose book about the far-reaching consequences the rise of Amazon has had on American society and economy is siffused with years of deep thinking and research. His focus in this is not so much the actual company but more the repercussions that could be felt in all strata of American society. Told through the lives of several individuals, he looks at topics like data centers, concentration of wealth in a small number of cities and the declining dignity of this new class of jobs. While I sometimes wanted more clarity, it remains a chilling masterpiece.
After reading my collegue's review, I decided to give it a shot, being sex-related sociology amongst my fields of interest.
Ania Srinivasan deals with thorny topics which feminists have been engaging for decades with, without coming across as condescending. On the contrary, her stance on the different issues is imbued with knowledge and humbleness of not having necessarily the final answer. Her intellectual honesty is just so outstanding that - no matter if you agree with her or not - you can't help but keep the book glued to your eyes!

I hope to hear more of her publishings soon
