Seit 1964 hat Rudolf Thome 28 Spielfilme und sechs Kurzfilme gedreht. In den Umbrüchen des Neuen Deutschen Films gestartet, doch stets abseits von Oberhausen realisiert, besitzt sein Werk innerhalb des (bundes-)deutschen Kinos eine "Kontinuität, die zu den absoluten Ausnahmefällen im deutschen Film zählt" (Bert Rebhandl). In den 1960er Jahren noch Teil der Münchner Gruppe, die dem deutschen Film ein spezifisch europäisches Flair hinzufügte, drehte Thome seit Mitte der 1970er Jahre Filme in und über Berlin, ehe er Ende der 1990er Jahre die Räume der Stadt gegen die Weite des Landes eintauschte. Dabei kehrte er immer wieder, selbst in seinen expliziten Genrearbeiten, zum eigentlichen Kern seiner Geschichten zurück: der Erkundung und der Entfaltung der Beziehung zwischen Mann und Frau.
