Il centenario della nascita di Robert L. Stevenson, che cadrà quest´anno il 13 novembre, non cambierà probabilmente di molto l´ambigua considerazione di cui gode l´autore dell´Isola del tesoro. La critica non è sinora uscita dalla difficoltà di conciliare l´ammirazione per la nitida e fiabesca vivacità della sua pagina - quella qualità che rende R.L.S. caro e accetto anche ai lettori ragazzi - con la mancanza della cosiddetta «profondità», della problematica seria, di ogni apparente interesse sociale e umano. Non è un caso - si dice - che R.L.S. abbia scritto un libro intitolato Le nuove mille e una notte: sempre i personaggi dei suoi romanzetti, delle sue novelle, delle sue fiabe, hanno l´aria di muoversi in un´atmosfera rarefatta, pittoresca, di mera fantasia unidimensionale, come appunto accade, o sembra accadere, nel novelliere arabo. E infatti - si ricorda - R.L.S. che visse sempre malato, preoccupandosi esclusivamente di problemi di stile e di bella invenzione, finì la sua vita nell´eremitaggio di Samoa, lontano dal tumulto e dai problemi della patria e della società.
