Spre deosebire de unele scrieri anterioare marcate de sentimentalism Åi melodramÄ, în Marile speranÅ£eperspectiva lui Charles Dickens asupra universului infantil nu e una edulcoratÄ. Pentru Pip copilaÅul sau pentru Pip tânÄrul, prima înÅ£elegere a lumii e, dacÄ nu dureroasÄ, cel puÅ£in supÄrÄtoare: personajul descoperÄ în ochii celorlalÅ£i cÄ e necioplit, cÄ e îmbrÄcat sÄrÄcÄcios etc. În Marile speranÅ£e stau împreunÄ multe dintre temele specifice secolului al XIX-lea: exotismul social, comportamentele psihice bizare, inocenÅ£a Åi generozitatea declasaÅ£ilor societÄÅ£ii, slÄbiciunile naturii umane Åi capacitatea individului de a-Åi modifica fundamental condiÅ£ia, hazardul transformat în destin.O mare parte din scrierile lui Dickens sunt extrem de realiste, iar în privinÅ£aforÅ£ei sale de evocare vizualÄ, probabil cÄ nu a fost niciodatÄ egalat. OdatÄ ce Dickens a descris ceva, imaginea îÅ£i rÄmâne în minte pentru întreaga viaÅ£Ä.
