Last week I told a colleague about reading a book about Amazon and his immediate question was, "is it very scary?" So let me just clarify right away, that I fully excpect this to be the scariest book I will read this year. The same seems to be true for Alec McGillis whose book about the far-reaching consequences the rise of Amazon has had on American society and economy is siffused with years of deep thinking and research. His focus in this is not so much the actual company but more the repercussions that could be felt in all strata of American society. Told through the lives of several individuals, he looks at topics like data centers, concentration of wealth in a small number of cities and the declining dignity of this new class of jobs. While I sometimes wanted more clarity, it remains a chilling masterpiece.

After reading my collegue's review, I decided to give it a shot, being sex-related sociology amongst my fields of interest.
Ania Srinivasan deals with thorny topics which feminists have been engaging for decades with, without coming across as condescending. On the contrary, her stance on the different issues is imbued with knowledge and humbleness of not having necessarily the final answer. Her intellectual honesty is just so outstanding that - no matter if you agree with her or not - you can't help but keep the book glued to your eyes!

Dussmann verkauft Kultur und begreift sich als Kultur, muss sich somit jedoch auch Kulturkritik stellen. Eine der einflussreichsten kulturtheoretischen und kulturkritischen Schriften verfasste Sigmund Freud bereits im Jahr 1930. Die Arbeit gehört sicherlich mit zu seinen wichtigsten Werken. Wer wissen möchte was (nach Freud) Kultur mit Unlust zu tun hat und welchen Preis wir für kultureller Fortschritt zahlen, der sollte dieses Buch ganz oben auf den eigenen Lesestapel legen.
