Laing is one of those author who could write about road management and I'd happily read it - if she's writing about it, you can be sure it's going to be good. Lucky me then, that she's chosen to write about one of my favourite topics - gardens! Mixing memoir, biography, cultural history and biology as is her wont, what emerges is a touching and vibrant celebration of gardens that casts a critical eye on their political implications. She's especially interesting on the garden's place between private eden and selfless ecological endeavor. How heartening to read that a good garden can foster as much biodiversity as untouched nature. It made me want to go on a garden road trip of the UK immediately and mark half of the book to research all of the plants she mentions. A clear-eyed, blooming delight!
