Product description

Andrew Root's Ministry in a Secular Age trilogy offers a developed practical theology that uniquely attends to divine action. Root engages with Charles Taylor's articulation of our cultural context and the challenge Taylor raises for Christian life in a Western world that has found divine action increasingly unbelievable.

In Faith Formation in a Secular Age, Root provides an alternative take on the issue of youth drifting away from the church and articulates how faith can be formed in our secular age. Through an abundance of examples, The Pastor in a Secular Age explores how pastors have both perpetuated and responded to this secular age, and provides a new vision for pastoral ministry today. The Congregation in a Secular Age explores why congregations feel pressured by the speed of change in modern life and encourages an approach that doesn't fall into the negative traps of our secular age.

Praise for Faith Formation in a Secular Age

"If we care about the future of faith formation, every seminarian should be reading this book."
--James K. A. Smith, Calvin University; author of You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit

"Root's book is the perfect response to anyone looking at Moralistic Therapeutic Deism and wondering how in the world we got here. It epitomizes what it means to be a practical theologian and ultimately leaves the reader knowing and loving God more."
--Amanda J. Drury, Indiana Wesleyan University

Praise for The Pastor in a Secular Age

"The implications of Taylor's analysis of secularity are enormous, but few have taken up the challenge to look through Taylor at ministry in our world. Root has, and he has done so successfully and spectacularly."
--Scot McKnight, Northern Seminary

"A must-read for anyone preparing for pastoral ministry or currently in ministry."
--Annette Brownlee, Wycliffe College, University of Toronto

Praise for The Congregation in a Secular Age

"Required reading for the next generation of Christian leaders. Root provides a clear and resounding perspective on why and how the church matters in a secular age."
--Pamela Ebstyne King, Thrive Center for Human Development, Fuller Theological Seminary

"A fascinating and timely exploration of time, church, and culture. This is a book well worth reading."
--John Swinton, University of Aberdeen
