I must admit that until the recent war started in Ukraine, the only modern Ukrainian writer I had read was Kurkov. When I worked in a bookshop in London, he was a firm favourite among the staff beloved for his off-beat, funny novels. However the first book of his I read was his excellent Maidan Diaries - a first-hand account of another turbulent period in Ukraine's existence. It was only later that I came to his novels and I began with this little masterpiece - the story of Viktor, an obituary writer whose subjects never seem to actually die, and his pet penguin. As the novel develops it moves from this gloriously comic start to become an enthralling slow paced thriller as Viktor becomes aware he is in mortal danger. I am extremely reluctant to give away too many more details as I think I would otherwise ruin an almost perfect short novel, which is a reminder of its writer's comic talents alongside his urgent, brilliant prose.
