In the aftermath of WW1, people all over the world plotted ambitious ways to try and reform society in such a way that conflict on a global scale would never again be possible. To achieve this, they felt entirely new societal structures were required which would grow from small utopian communities.
Anna Neima takes six of these communities from around the world, handling each one in an individual chapter. Despite this broken up approach, one of the most startling aspects of this book is how much personal continuity there were between movements that spread from Japan and India to California. On top of this many of them shared an obsession with Tolstoy and his top-down approach to reform society. I was endlessy fascinated by some of the tantalising visionaries and unhinged looks behind these communities and felt Neima does a superb job in showing how these six remote communities were part of a flawed but ambitious global network.

Der perfekte Schmöker für alle Geschichtsinteressierten! Dem Belgier Bart van Loo ist mit seinem Buch über Anfang und Untergang der Geschichte Burgunds ein mitreißend spannendes Buch gelungen. Ich war begeistert von dem Buch. Seine Philipps und Karls, Johanns und Margeriten, die Kühnen, die Guten und die ohne Furcht, fast hat man das Gefühl, sie sind ihm ans Herz gewachsen. Gleich zu Beginn des Buches erzählt er über seine Leidenschaft für französische Geschichte, die eng mit seiner Familie verbunden ist. Als Leser spürt man die Leidenschaft für seine "Geschichte von 1111 Jahren und einem Tag" und in jeder Zeile weiß er gekonnt diese Zeitspanne auferstehen zu lassen: zum Beispiel seine Beschreibungen der meisterhaft ausgeführten Bilder Jan van Eycks oder der Reichtum einer herzoglich gedeckten Speisetafel bis hin zum Ablauf von Ritterturnieren - alles ist seriös recherchiert und macht einfach Lust sich in diese Zeit fallen zu lassen!

Was für ein Buch! Man taucht völlig ahnungslos ein, in diese Berliner Liebesgeschichte, die noch nicht einmal besonders originell ist, aber trotzdem zu Herzen geht, und Stunden später, beim Wiederauftauchen fühlt man sich völlig zerschlagen, aber zum Glück auch immerhin notdürftig wieder zusammengesetzt.
Ein Buch übers Hinfallen, Wiederaufstehen und Vergeben. Ein Buch über die Liebe. Und das Leben, das manchmal auf erschreckende Art dazwischenkommt. Und dann doch irgendwie weiter geht. Eine unbedingte Empfehlung.

In Joseph Conrad's short story "Heart of Darkness" the madmen Kurtz utters a sentence which has become infamous: "Exterminate all the Brutes". This story as well as the infamous sentence are indispensable to Sven Lindqvist's attempt to intertwine historical and biographical fact and fiction. It is also the outset for the author's journey through the history of Europe's expansion at the heart of which lies capitalistic greed and violent contempt for otherness. While the journey's result is a harrowing account of the depraved methods of imperial Europe's colonialism, it is also a detailed examination of the brutal submission and extermination of people who were regarded as inferior. The book itself is a mixture of memoir, travel diary and history book and is narrated by a man whose powerful quest for truth and justice rings through every page.

Einen wunderbaren Schmöker hat der Lyriker Norbert Hummelt geschrieben und sich einem literarisch außergewöhnlichen Jahrgang gewidmet. "Annus mirabilis", Wunderjahr, so werden Entdeckungen oder Erfindungen bezeichnet, die mit gleich mehreren besonderen Ereignissen zusammenfallen. Zwei Werke der angelsächsischen Literatur weisen einen neuen Weg in die Moderne: "Ulysses" und "The Waste Land". Als begeisterter Leser von James Joyce und durch eine Neuübersetzung des Eliot Gedichtes stellt Hummelt über Grenzen hinweg Gegensätzliches und doch Verbindendes fest. Eine spannungsgeladene Zeit nach dem verheerenden Weltkrieg, in dem Europa in Schutt und Asche versank und aus der die bedeutendsten Werke der Moderne, auch in der Architektur oder Malerei, hervorgingen. Eine persönliche Erinnerung des Jahres 1922 an seine Großmutter Franziska bindet er in die Geschichte mit ein - als beständigen ruhigen Lebensentwurf in einer Zeit voll paralleler Ereignisse und radikalen Vorstellungen.

I really didn't expect to love this as much as I did. The Reactor is, in the most general sense, a memoir that tries to approach grief by relating it to radioactive decay (and particularly the Chernobyl disaster). Studies on grief seem to be a thing right now, and I have to say I tend to be somewhat sceptical about the kind of symbolic generalization that can come with it. However, Blackburn isn't too keen on that either - basically, this book is a perpetual reflection of his inability to actually make sense of anything, least of all the death of his father. This deliberate no-sense-making feels raw, unfinished, like a sketch. In essayistic(ish) fragments, the reader follows Blackburn along an unruly path where the next step is often less determined by cohesive structure than it is by associative references. He never loses his thread, though: this strange kaleidoscopic genre-mix will pull you in like a maelstrom.

There are a lot of books out there about people tracing their family's history of loss through the Holocaust. So many sometimes that trying to pick the really interesting ones out can become quite bewildering. Indeed even the idea of working out which stories are "more interesting" or "worthy" seems almost inhumane. Menachem Kaiser's 'Plunder' is one where there needs to be no debate. It tells the story of his attempt to get back a building in a small-ish Polish town which had once belonged to his family. Along the way, he is introduced to a group of 'treasure hunters' - people who desperately seek Nazi treasure in remote parts of the Polish landscape in order to solve decades long (often likely non-existent) puzzles.
What made Kaiser's book so interesting to me was his self-questioning narrative. He constantly analyses what both he and the treasure hunters are doing and does not seek easy moral answers, which makes for a profound reflection on the notion of ownership and loss.
